The Genesis of the High Stakes Worldview: An Ongoing Story of Enlightenment, Existential Risk, and Human Vocation at Kardashev Scale
Thomas Moynihan lectures on the history of the idea of existential risk and how humanity has come to understand the opportunities and perils it faces. This is the first lecture in the New School Policy and Design for Outer Space's Transceiver series for Spring 2021.
Dr. Moynihan is a writer from the UK, currently working with Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute. His work explores how our knowledge of the threats and promises of the future has developed throughout the past, revisiting the ways people have thought about both the failure and the flourishing of our species within the wider universe.
His latest work, “ X-Risk: How Humanity Discovered Its Own Extinction” can be found here: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/x-risk
